General information
How often are the IDNV databases updated?
Publishers send changes and new items on a daily basis. Programs are made available to all subscribers (and participants), with which they can receive the new data
anytime via the online update facility. They can then work with the very latest data.
For subscribers who cannot use the online update facility, a CD-ROM version with the latest data can be sent to them four times a year.

Is it possible to order via the IDNV?
The IDNV software contains a powerful ordering and clearing system. Orders can be sent directly to publishers in a quick and secure way.
The customer always has an excellent overview of his orders and he can change them as long as they haven't been sent to the publishers.

Is a multi-user version available?
The catalogue version can generally be used by multiple users, i.e. it can be installed
on the server and started directly through the network. When it is first started, the program creates the notepad
database and the pre-settings file locally for each client.
To operate the multi-user version, you need a multi-user key, which you will receive automatically
when you acquire a multi-user licence.

Which publishers participate in the IDNV and how many items does the IDNV contain?
Most important German publishers and important publishers from other countries currently participate in the IDNV. Small companies also
appreciate the system and are participants. The IDNV currently contains over 500,000 items and over 550,000 single titles.
Changes and new items are published on a daily basis and are made available to retailers via the online update.
Should you have any requests of publishers that are not in the IDNV, you are very welcome to contact us.

Who decides what items go into the IDNV database?
The publishers themselves. They register their new items and changes. For this, they are equipped with special software which guarantees entries of excellent quality.
After being checked, the data is then published into the IDNV.
There is no third party selection. Therefore, the publishers and subscribers can be assured that publishers' complete catalogues are reflected.

Are versions for Macintosh or Linux available?
At this time, only Windows is supported.
However, by means of a Windows emulation, the IDNV can be run with other operating systems.

Installation
Which hard/software is necessary?
- Operating system: Win 95 / NT 4.0 or higher
- Processor/RAM: Pentium 80/16MB or higher, recommended: P166/32MB
- Graphics card: SVGA (800x600 pixels)
- Hard drive: 150MB free space
- CD-ROM drive for installation

Will my operating system be modified by the IDNV?
During the installation, only required files are copied into the folder on the hard drive.
If desired, a program group/entry into the start menu and a desktop icon will be created. Only one entry
is made into the registry so that the IDNV can be deleted through the system control "software". This entry will be removed with the program.
The program can also be started directly from the CD-ROM.
In this case, the program creates the folder "IDNV" for the settings file and the notepad
in "My Documents". This can be deleted at any time when no longer needed.
In addition, you can copy the "IDNV" file onto your hard drive manually. In this case, the registry
remains unchanged.
When the program is run on the hard drive, all transaction files are placed only into the installation folder.

If the installation doesn't succeed...
If the installation process is interrupted or an error message is shown, please try
to copy the "IDNV" file onto your hard drive manually using Windows Explorer.
Should this still not work, your CD-ROM drive probably cannot read the CD properly. If possible,
repeat the installation on a different computer. Then you can transfer the installation to the other computer
through the network.
Once the copy process has succeeded, you can start the program from the hard drive.
If the CD cannot be installed on other computers, it is probably damaged. Please call our hotline
(see above)

Functions
Why is the search list empty at first?
The main databases have a very large data stock. If the number of data records exceeds 5000,
values will only be shown once a search criterion has been entered.
To top...
How do I search for any value in a field?
Enter an asterisk ( * ) into the search field to find all data records
that have a value in this field.
To top...
How can I search for empty fields?
Enter a minus ( - ) into the search field to find all data records
that are empty in this field.

The program always searches for word beginnings. How can I search for whole words?
In text fields, such as Complete title or Composer, the program searches for word beginnings,
i.e. the entry "Bach" also finds "Bachmann".
If you would like to search for a whole word, add a comma or a full stop after the search entry.
For example, to search for "Johann Sebastian Bach", enter "bach, j s"
or "j s bach." into the Composer field. The order of entries as well as
capitalisation are irrelevant in this context. (Please see the online help for further search options.)

How do I search for specific instrumentation, e.g. piano and violin?
In the column "Instruments/parts", the program generally searches
for word beginnings. i.e., entering "pia" (without the quotation marks)
finds all entries with this word beginning. "pia violi" finds all entries
with both of these word beginnings but also those that contain, for example, "flute" in addition.
To limit the results to piano and violin, add a "closed bracket" ")", i.e. "pia violi )".
This generally works for all free text columns. Of course, you can also spell out "piano",
but generally word beginnings suffice and save time.

Data exchange
| Attempt to connect the IDNV server fails.
What could be the cause? |
The data exchange is done via the internet on TCP-port 2222. The client (the application)
will open the connection to the server. If you experience any problems please check the following:
--------- Internet access via network ---------
In the data exchange dialog set "Connection" to "Network or open remote connection".
If the connection fails, a firewall may be blocking the transmission or your computer's data packets are
not transmitted to the internet.
Please make sure that your internet gateway's IP address is set properly in the TCP/IP settings of
your computer's network adapter and that the gateway passes the packets from/to the internet.
A HTTP-proxy server, as used for HTML browsers, will not work here!
--------- Connecting via firewall ---------
The firewall has to be configured to allow outgoing connections via port 2222.
Incoming connections on this port are not needed and may be blocked.
--------- Connecting via SOCKS server ---------
If you are working within a company network you might not be allowed to directly connect to the internet
or connections via the required Port 2222 are blocked by the firewall.
If however a SOCKS server is available you can use it as well.
In the data exchange dialog click the "..." button on the right hand side of the "Connection"-pop-up to enter
the required settings. If necessary ask your network administrator for further information.
--------- Dial-up with a Windows remote network connection ---------
In the data exchange dialog choose a connection from the "Connection"-pop-up and select "Disconnect after transfer" if you
want the connection to be opened and closed automatically.
--------- Using a special dial-up software (e.g. AOL) ---------
In the data exchange dialog set "Connection" to "Network or open remote connection".
Before you select "Start" in the send dialogue box, open the connection with your dial-up software as you usually do.
Then press "Start". After the data exchange has finished, you can close the connection.
If it still does not work, you should try to setup a Windows remote network connection.

I would like to update my databases automatically when I start my computer or when I log on to windows. How does it work?
Please open the windows autostart folder. You will find this for example in the start menu under
Programs (Right-click and then click on Open). Then, you can create a shortcut for
IDNV.exe in the IDNV-Catalogue installation folder.
Please now right-click on the shortcut, and then go to Properties.
In the field "Target", the path to IDNV.exe should be indicated. Please add a space behind it and then
-OnlineUpdate. Close the window by clicking on OK. Next time you log on, the update should be carried out.
After that, the program closes again.

Future
Will I be able to conduct HTML-based research on the Internet?
Yes, definitely.
The professional area of the IDNV currently takes priority.
In terms of speed, handling, functions, security and cost, the IDNV software family,
especially the catalogue for retailers and libraries, has clear advantages for daily use.
A solution based on HTML cannot provide the same level of performance.
Technically, it is easy to make an HTML-based version of the IDNV.
We will surely establish an Internet presence in connection with a clear concept
for users and the project. Retailers, in particular, will be consulted for such a solution,
especially for a shop version, which retailers can offer as a service to its customers.
